Care & Maintenance

Our furniture is made to last for generations. To preserve the quality of your RYE pieces, we recommend caring for each material according to the guidance below.

Wooden Furniture

Wood is an organic material thus it is influenced by daylight as well as air humidity. The ideal relative air humidity for furniture made from solid wood is between 30% to 60%. This means that the furniture should not be placed too close to heat sources such as wood burning stoves or radiators, just like direct sunlight will cause the relative air humidity to decrease and potentially lead to the development of cracks.

Oiled Furniture

DAILY CLEANING

For general cleaning use a cloth wrong out hard in lukewarm water to remove stains or dirt on the surface. Wipe afterwards with a dry cloth.

MAINTENANCE

We recommend oiling of the furniture 2-4 times every year.

- Leave the bed to dry.

- Polish the surface with fine sandpaper of grain 180-240 along the grain of the wood.

- Apply oil to a clean cloth or sponge and apply it in a fine layer along the grain of the wood.

- Leave the oil to dry for approx. two hours, then remove any surplus oil with a clean, dry cloth.

Please note: Cloths or sponges which have been used for oiling may potentially spontaneously ignite and, therefore, they should be stored in an airtight metal or glass container. This also applies if the cloth is discarded.

Soaped Furniture

CLEANING

For general cleaning use a cloth wrung out hard in lukewarm water. If the surfaces have become very dirty, you can add soap shavings to the water.

Note: Solid wood cannot withstand water in large quantities, so in case of spilled water on the furniture, the liquid must be wiped up immediately to avoid discoloration. Use a dry soft cloth for this.

MAINTENANCE

We recommend soap-treatment of the furniture approximately every other month for optimal maintenance.

Please note: If the wood rises after the first soap treatments, you should polish the bed with fine sandpaper of grain 180-240 along the grain of the wood. After polishing the bed, it is important to give it a further soap treatment.

Stained Furniture

CLEANING

For general cleaning use a cloth wrong out hard in lukewarm water to remove stains or dirt on the surface. Wipe afterwards with a dry cloth.

MAINTENANCE

There are no methods by which you can remove scratches and pressure marks on a lacquered surface yourself. The only way to
get rid of the ravages of time is by sanding and subsequent repainting. We recommend that you leave this work to a professional. In this case, contact info@rye-sleep.com

Upholstered Furniture

We recommend maintaining your upholstered furniture by dusting and carefully removing stains.

It is important to remove stains as soon as they occur. The guideline below is purely recommendations and cannot guarantee complete stain removal.

Stain Removal

- Place three to five layers of paper towel on the stain and apply pressure to let the paper soak up the liquid in the stain. Repeat until the paper towel no longer soaks up liquid.

- Moist the stain lightly with lukewarm water – if the stain is bloody, use cold water. It is paramount that a minimum of water is applied. (Sparkling water can also be used as the sparkles dissolve the dirt).  To avoid edge marks, we recommend moving the cloth in gentle movements towards the center of the stain.

- Once the surface has been moistened with water, the upholstery must be rubbed down carefully with a terry towel.

Please note: When removing stains, it is important to moisten the entire surface area of the piece of the furniture that is being cleaned, as uneven distribution of water may cause discoloration. It may be necessary to repeat the stain removal process several times to completely remove the stain.

Mattresses & Pillows

We recommend removing mattress and pillow covers and flip the foam core once every six months. This allows the pressure to be distributed in different areas of the foam over time and contributes to an extended durability. Further we recommend that you use a mattress pad and a sheet in order to protect the mattress.

Washing Instructions

All our covers are removable and made from unbleached organic cotton. To maintain both quality and appearance of the product we recommend handwashing of the textile.

Please note: Regular washing of your textile is often a matter of habit rather than hygiene. Over time, washing weakens the textile and sometimes it suffices to remove your duvet and open the window for ventilation.
